Knitting and Tatting

Another pair of Cascade Fixation socks off the needles. I'll probably start another pair to round out my goal of having lots of summer sox to wear to work.

This is a design that I just sort of made up along the way. The cuff is a knit purl variation, nothing fancy, and then just stockinette on the foot.

In the works are the Tofutsies Tidal wave socks. I had a hard time getting the pattern to really show up in the photo but it's really a lot prettier in person. It really does look like waves rolling in on the shore. Especially in this lovely blue color.

As for the tatting part of this post, it does have to do with needlework but, it's not what you'd think.

I had a lizard tattoo done on my back about 25 years ago. It was OK, not really what I had in mind but OK. I have been thinking about having it re-done for a number of years. Since I had this week off and I am in the midst of a mid life crisis, I decided that having the tat redone was cheaper than cosmetic surgery and I might as well buck up and go for it.

I did a little research and found Ed at Royal Oak Tattoo. I decided that he was the guy to do the work since he's also a wildlife artist and has an extensive knowledge of reptiles.

I had an idea in mind but basically I just let Ed run with it. I wasn't really sure about his original sketch but...I decided that trusting the artist was the best way to go. Trust, needless to say is very important when getting inked.

I could not be more pleased with the result, it almost has an optical illusion effect to it.
The color work and shading that he did is really outstanding. It's pretty large, about 8" long and 4" wide. It took almost 2 hours to complete. The outline is the hard (painful) part of any tat but Ed seemed to know when to lift the gun off and give me a few seconds of reprieve. I have plans to expand on this one maybe some "vineyness" wrapping on to my shoulder and a wisteria blossom trailing down on to my arm. Tatting, like knitting can be addictive.

BTW, for those who know me in real life, I did accomplish another one of my vacation goals...yeah baby, you know what I'm talkin' about ;-)

I will say that I have no intention of ever getting a tattoo, but yours is quite artistic and beautiful.

Ha, at first I was like, "oh, so she does knitting AND tatting (the needlework), how multi-talented!"

The socks are rockin' as usual. And the tat is absolutely gorgeous. I don't think I could handle anything that big, but way to go for you fulfilling a goal.

Speaking of fulfilling goals... WOO HOO FOR YOU!!! Glad all is working out as you wanted it to.

Hope to see you Tues.. I can make it another late night for a change.

Very cool! I have a tortoise tatoo on my shoulder that showed up after a drunken weekend in my early 20's - I like it ok but it's real faded and would love to have it reworked - I'll have to look your guy up!

You're the Queen of Sock Knitters, that's for sure! I'm way impressed by the speed you're knitting those goodies up, and they all look so great! Beautiful colors too!
And that tattoo - woah! This is stunning indeed and may as well be one of the most amazing tattoos I've ever seen! I've had a lot of times in my life when I desperately wanted to get a tattoo but never got around to it, then there were times when I thought I'm glad I don't have one - but seeing yours made me want to go right out and get such a goodie too! Very impressive, and a true piece of art indeed!

thanks for sharing your ink... you just reminded me how much I want another one! Of course it's not in my budget. I also don't know which is more addicting... tattoos or yarn!

Your tattoo is awesome! My mom has a pet iguana and is thinking of getting one tattooed on her back. I keep hearing from people that the outlining is the worst part, but when I got mine done it wasn't all that bad. The second color, though, just about killed me.

Wow, that looks amazing! So cool! I have a tattoo that is now almost 15 years old. I like it well enough but would love to have something new and more meaningful to me.

Your socks are also fabulous.

What is this other goal you have met? I am so intrigued I may not sleep!!

Way to go Marj!! With the socks and of course the tat, I love it. It sure beats the traditional hearts etc that everyone seems to go with.
