Diversity in Knitting and in Life

Did I mention how much I HATE weaving in ends. Yes, HATE it. But they are finished my mish mash mixed up socks. They truly are asymmetrical. I didn't realize until after they were finished that I did a garter stitch border on the one heel flap and not the other. Oh well, isn't diversity the spice of life?

Which leads me to the part of my post where I get up on my soap box.
I have encountered of late a certain cadre of individuals, not all together but randomly, different people in different places and situation but of the same mind set. The one common thread of these individuals is that of "majority rules".
Does it have to do with the two topics that people are not supposed to discuss in polite company? Yes, gentle readers, I'm afraid it does; religion and politics.
Of course like most people, I have my own beliefs and opinions that have been formed and shaped over the years based on my own life experiences. My assumption is that this is still allowable and acceptable in this country.
The people who founded this country understood the dangers of religious and political bias and created laws and a system of checks and balances to prevent this country from becoming corrupted by those who would seek to create a state religion or a political system with little or no room for debate or dissension.

For example:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

This is stated in the first amendment of the Constitution.

America is a country of diverse cultures, religions, backgrounds and beliefs. It grieves me that this diversity is seen as a threat by some instead of our greatest strength. Although I don't always agree with others regarding their views I feel like I at least try to listen and understand while exercising my right to voice a dissenting opinion. I hope that I am always able to do so.

Amen to that sister! I think it is a sad reflection of our society that having an opposing view to the "leaders" of our nation makes you unpatriotic.

That's deep Marj. And you're right it's truly sad.

Our PM echoes that view: You are either with us, or against us. Very sad. What cool socks!! I am obsessed with matchiness and symmetry but these look fantastic!! I hate sewing in ends too!!!

Gorgeous socks and I HATE knitting related sewing of any kind!!

There was a time when you could agree to disagree but I think our leaders (yes our country is the same) have forgotten.

Love the socks! They make me really happy with all of those colors and patterns. Wow!

I too am saddened by certain sections of people who fail to see that diversity is what makes this country the best place to live. We should not all conform to be the same. How boring that would be!

Woah, those are some wild socks! I love them!
I completely agree with your statement. Sometimes people are so frustrating.

Wild socks are a great set up for such serious comments. Good job on both!

I share your views on religious and political diversity, and freedom of thought and speech. I have never subscribed to the view that one should never discuss religion or politics in polite company.

I don't feel qualified to comment technically on your socks, but I can put forward yet another controversial view in today's climate, and that is I don't believe in socks before marriage.

Also, I'm not that keen on single socks marriage (though considering the number of my own socks that become separated from their mates during the wash I sometimes feel I am in a single socks marriage myself.)

Long live diversity, and death to Political Correctness!

I'm with you on this too! And in addition to the majority rules idea, people do not take responsibility for their actions these days either. I know tht is a different issue, but it still points to the deterioration of society's individuality. My Mom says that if your friends are going to jump off the bridge, not to follow them. She still has the individuality I so respect and cherish.

Great socks, btw!

Bravo!
Up with diversity! Nothing is more patriotic than diversity of thought, experience, culture - and everything else.
